A braided essay is a powerful form of creative nonfiction that intertwines two or more distinct narratives or thematic threads to create a cohesive and multi-layered whole. Like a literal braid, these “strands” appear and reappear throughout the essay, building resonance and revealing deeper meanings through their interplay.
In this generative workshop, we’ll explore what makes a braided essay work and how the form can hold complexity, contradiction, and discovery. Through readings, guided prompts, and discussion, you’ll experiment with your own braids: blending personal stories with other threads such as cultural commentary or history. We’ll look at how juxtaposition, repetition, and white space can help you build momentum and meaning.
Taught in an inclusive, welcoming environment, this workshop is designed to support risk-taking, reflection, and connection.
By the end of this class, you’ll:
Understand the core structure and purpose of the braided essay
Explore techniques like juxtaposition, repetition, and white space to shape meaning
Generate new writing through prompts and guided exercises
Experiment with weaving together different narrative threads (personal, researched, observational)
Leave with the beginnings of a new braided essay and ideas for how to continue
Gain inspiration and support from a community of other writers
