Writing Flash Essay

How can you tell a thrilling true story in less than 1,000 words? One-part story and one-part poem, flash essay helps you get to the heart of what you really want to say while keeping readers riveted until the final word.

In this class, open for writers of all genres and levels, you’ll learn tools to make your writing sing. You’ll begin crafting your own flash essays and will have the chance to share them aloud and receive positive feedback from your instructor and peers. We’ll read and discuss flash essays from writers including Brenda Miller, Ira Sukrungruang, Rasma Haidri, and others.


Outcomes:

By the end of this class, you’ll:

  • Understand the flash essay as a literary form

  • Read and discuss flash essays from other writers

  • Learn craft tools for shaping riveting flash essays

  • Write the beginning drafts of your own flash essays

  • Connect with a compassionate community of other writers
