Poetry Essentials

Poetry Essentials

Tuesdays, May 14, 21 & 28
6-8PM CST | ONLINe

Does poetry sometimes feel mysterious to you? Why do some poems make you cry and others bore you?

In this class, you’ll learn the essential tools of writing strong and vivid poetry, including imagery, voice, and the line.

Each week, we’ll read and discuss poems that embody a major craft tool and engage in writing prompts designed to help you bring these elements into your work. You’ll also have a chance to workshop one of your poems and receive supportive feedback from the group.

This class is designed for those who are newer to poetry as well as more experienced poets who want to brush up on craft.

Schedule:

Week 1: Imagery (including sensory detail, metaphor, and simile)

Week 2: Voice (including syntax, diction, tone, and surprise)

Week 3: The line (including line length, enjambment, stanzas, and whitespace)

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: may 8th

Pay-from-the heart tuition:

  • Full price: $300
