Getting Started With Publishing

  • Arts + Literature Laboratory 111 South Livingston Street Madison, WI, 53703 United States (map)

Ready to share your writing with the world but unsure where to begin? Whether you’ve never submitted anything before or just need a little guidance, this class will walk you through the basics of publishing short work—like stories, essays, and poems.

You’ll research places to send your work and get step-by-step guidance through the actual submission process, so by the end of class, you’ll have submitted at least one piece!

By the end of this class, you’ll:

  • Understand why publishing might be a good fit for you

  • Assess when a piece is ready to send out

  • Strengthen your submissions with practical tips

  • Know where to find literary journals, magazines, and writing contests

  • Find at least one place to send your work

  • Navigate the entire submission process with step-by-step guidance

  • Connect with a community of other writers

Note: This class focuses on submitting short-form work. We won’t be covering book-length publishing.
