Revising Personal Essays

  • The Stonehouse 103 Owen Road Monona, WI, 53716 United States (map)
“For your writing to change, you must change.”
— Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew

It feels wonderful when an idea sweeps us off our feet and words tumble onto the page. But then what? We can tell the piece isn’t done—we might not even know what it is. What do we do next?

In this class, we’ll explore revision in both practical and philosophical terms: How can we see our writing with fresh eyes?

Over six sessions, you’ll learn numerous tools for nurturing an essay draft into completion. You’ll engage in readings and discussions, do in-class revision exercises, and receive feedback from your peers on an essay in progress.

You’ll leave with:

  • A wealth of tools for revising personal essays

  • Time to complete revision exercises in class with help from me if you get stuck

  • Readings, discussions, and homework to support your learning

  • Feedback from me and your peers on one of your essays

  • Connection with a community of other writers
